bacchae 2000

Bacchae 2000 adapted and directed by David Stuttard. Choreography by Thea Nerissa Barnes.

Raise your glasses- of wine naturally-in a toast to this exciting new version of one of the great tragedies of Greek drama…this is a classy interpretation of a classic. As a challenge to the mind with its concepts of morality, wisdom and authority, it tastes as it looks. Very quaffable. The tragedy doesn’t fail to move, becoming particularly affecting when Agave (played by the excellent Andrea Ellis) cradles the bundle that is her son’s head. Stuttard’s translation, a combination of narration and dialogue comes over as modern and muscular as the cast. Lynda Murdin – Yorkshire Post

Strongly visual, almost cinematic experience, strong on sensuality and eroticism Sheffield Telegraph

With clever cross-casting, and on a simple effectively lit climbing frame set..this is an athletic, sensual, ritualistic staging. Glasgow Herald

This stunning, absorbing and beautifully produced staging seems to bring out the very worst in both sexes, but it was great fun to watch! Having Tamsin Shasha play Dionysus added a welcome ambiguity to the gender war-her agility never ceased to impress…Don’t miss this company when they return to the city. Aberdeen Press & Journal

David Stuttard, who translates and directs Euripides latest offering, also proves once again his skill in tackling the classics..with choreographer Thea Nerissa Barnes’ advice, the cast of five move around the rig with such stunning, sensual grace and then, when tribal rhythms are beaten, their bodies are in a total state of frenzy…an incredibly sexy performance. The Stage

Actors of Dionysus’ production of Bacchae was as highly charged a piece of theatre as Crieff will see in years. Words cannot adequately describe the power of this performanceStrathearn Herald

What a story it is and what a translation and production. David Stutard has given us a wonderful play true in many ways to Euripides’ original but worked in a way that is wholly relevant to the twenty first century. Dionysus played in a brilliant cross-dressing role by Tamsin Shasha …a truly riveting performance who could get a medal for her gymnastics on the scaffolding as well as for her acting..wonderful play, wonderful acting, wonderful production..all in all an amazing evening Daily Post
