antigone 2001

Antigone 2001 adapted and directed by David Stuttard.. Choreography by Thea Nerissa Barnes. Voicework by Susan Stern.

The production, lasting some 75 minutes, is fast paced and taut, incorporating atmospheric music, some balletic movement and pared-down performances…one to savour Irish Times

A very lean, fast-moving and flowing piece of theatre that was often visually stunning…Christopher Patrick Nolan as the aide was excellent: a measured and dispassionate commentary on the unfolding action. Paul Bridges was impressive, too as Creon..Andrew Callaghan’s cockney soldier was shrewdly observed and even raised a few laughs. Tamsin Shasha was simply outstanding as Ismene and the seer Teiresias. Her physical playing as the seer was mesmerising…a haunting production Sheffield Telegraph

an astonishingly well-staged production of words and movement which grew in intensity to its dramatic climax…the final scene, during which bright hand held torches create a spectacular effect, was quite brilliant staging and showed just why the company is considered to be the UK’s finest exponents of this form of theatre..a superb production Halifax Evening Courier

Actors of Dionysus is one company that consistently presents an ancient classic to a modern world n a way that an audience can really respond to. This is, in the best sense, a very theatrical production. On the firm foundation of an imaginative adaptation, the company use a variety of techniques – choreography, physical theatre, evocative music and striking set design – to create a strong emotional impact – it’s really worth seeing if you can get a ticket.Bath Chronicle

Just as I was beginning to wonder exactly why I first became interested in theatre, and sick of all the musicals, along come Actors of Dionysus. This York-based group is named after a god and they were certainly heaven sent. The company’s production of Antigone has renewed my love of theatre. From the stylised dance of love between Antigone and Haemon to the gymnastic antics of the blind prophet Teiresias, this was a show to restore your faith in the genre.Exeter Express and Echo
